Learn About Episodic Novels in Fiction
Learn About Episodic Novels in FictionLearn About Episodic Novels in FictionAn episodic novel is a narrative composed of loosely connected incidents, each one more or less self-contained, often connected by a central character or characters. It is one way of constructing a plot. Typically, characters change very little over the course of an episodic novel, though a relatively simple story may unfold. To get a feeling for an episodic novel, think of the television series of the 1960s and 1970s. The characters and storylines could be carefully crafted or merely sketched the subject matter could be dark or humorous the message of the show could be non-existent or quite deep. But no matter what occurred in any given episode, the character, his or her motivations, and the relationships among characters would change little or not at all. Even when characters encountered new people and places each week, no episode would have any significant impact on the spitzenkraft. The History of the Episodic Novel The very first episodic novel (and arguably the very first novel ever written) was Lazarillo de Tormes, published in 1554. Lazarillo is not only the first episodic novel, it is also the first picaresque novel. Picaresque novels tell the story, often from the first person, of a lowborn person or rogue who drifts from place to place and adventure to adventure. Lazarillo was an inspiration to Miguel de Cervantes, who wrote the episodic, picaresque novel in 1605. From that point forward, the genre became much more popular. A few famous authors of episodic novels fruchtwein of which could also be considered picaresque include Jonathan SwiftCharles DickensHenry FieldingMark TwainJack KerouacJRR Tolkien (the prototype for hundreds of similarly episodic fantasy novels and series) In short, the episodic novel has become an entrenched entity in the world of fiction writing. Perhaps not surprisingly, most famous episodic novels are written by men, and most have male protagoni sts. This is partly an outgrowth of the reality that it has always been easier for boys and men to be footloose adventurers. How Episodic Novels Are Structured It is relatively easy to plan out an episodic novel. You start with a character who, for one reason or another, is launched into a situation that involves travel and a series of adventures with different groups of characters and challenges. In the end, the protagonist finds happiness (or, at least, a satisfying outcome). Sixteen-year-old Joe runs away from an abusive home and finds himself drifting from job to job, sometimes finding kindness and sometimes encountering abuse. In the end, he falls in love and gets married.A young centaur is told that his world is crumbling, and he is the only one who can save it. He is given an amulet and a map and sets off to find the spell that protects his world. Along the way he meets... in the end he finds...A middle-aged man loses his wife, quits his job, and sets out to discover his true self. Along the way he meets... in the end he finds... While this type of structure is sufficient to outline an episodic novel, it is by no means enough to craft a satisfying set of characters, situations, tensions, and outcomes. In addition to these basic elements, you will need to Create a fully rounded protagonist and, most likely, at least a few additional fully conceived characters with whom your protagonist can interact.Invent tensions that not only motivate your character but also draw your reader along. Everyone knows that your character will save his planet, his soul, etc. in the end so internal tensions will be as important as the general direction of the plot.Conceive of a meaningful outcome. Your story may start with the question Will Charlie the Centaur save the world? But since your readers know the answer before they start reading (of course he will), you will need to think more deeply about what happens to Charlie and his world by the end of the story.

You Love Your Career But Youre Burning Out
You Love Your Career⦠But Youâre Burning Out You Love Your Career⦠But Youâre Burning Out Like many of my classmates, shortly after college, I joined the ranks of a top strategy and management consulting firm. I knew I was signing up for long hours. But the reality of that didnt really sink in until a few months in, when I asked for a vacation day to go to a friends wedding. My request was granted. Sort of.My wife handled the long drive to the wedding, while I spent my day off in the passengers seat working furiously on my laptop (with occasional stops at cafes to recharge my computer and send emails via the free wifi.)This pace continued for months. Even on national holidays, I would hole up in my apartment to work.I began to wonder how long I could continue.Did I Hate What I Was Doing?Did I hate my job? My Boss? Was I working in a toxic or negative workplace? No, in fact, the opposite was true.Yes, I was in a high-performing organization. But it was also very supportive. I was getting to hear and shape the stories of some of the most prominent philanthropists in the countr y (Melinda Gates, Ted Turner.) I was supporting the efforts of one of the largest nonprofits in the country to reverse the growing epidemic of diabetes.Yet, as this pace of work continued, I began to care less about my work. What I had once done with zeal and drive, I began to do to get it done. No, I Had Too Much of a Good ThingWhile I didnt recognize it then, what I was experiencing was an early sign of burnout: apathy towards my work.According to Dr. Christina Maslachs assessment of workplace burnout (theMaslach Burnout Inventory), there are five dimensions to the experience of burnout:How to recognize burnout?Emotional exhaustion,Depersonalization,Personal accomplishment,Cynicism,Professional efficacy. Two of them connect to the apathy I was feeling: depersonalization (unfeeling or impersonal response to ones work) and cynicism (indifference or distant attitude towards ones work).Burnout was upon me.But how could I be burning out in a job I loved at an organization I loved? After all, society has largely stood behind the advice of this old quoteChoose a job you love, and youll never have to work a day in your life.Unfortunately, its not that simple.A five-year study in the UK found that the mental health of 20% of the top-performing leaders of UK businesses is affected by corporate burnout.Or consider the experience of a high-performing specialist at one of the largest technologies companies. He was given the opportunity to play a manager role on a project he really cared about.A few weeks into the project, heres what happened:We had a really important conference call I had spent a lot of time preparing for. The call went well, but when I finished the call, I realized I was feeling really sick. It got worse after that. I went to the doctor later that day, and he told me I had pneumonia. I ended up in the ER the next morning and couldnt work for the full next week. It was a shocking moment for me. Im young and healthy, but I realized that if I push myself, I will burn out.As my own path to burnout became more certain, I resolved that there must be another way.Similarly intrigued by this possibility, a co-worker (Colin) and I started meeting every other week to discuss productivity. We didnt have much of an objective and it showed. We had little to show for six months of meeting. So we decided to tweak our approach slightly:Tracking Time to Boost ProductivityTo give more rigor to our meetings, we decided to define a metric for our productivity: average weekly hours worked. We began measuring it and setting goals for reducing it. So it was a metric of unproductivity, really. In one month, we decreased our average weekly hours worked by 10%. Over the ensuing six months, we brought it down by 15-20%.But we were still getting just as much done as before. We didnt quite know what we had done to make such a difference, other than tracking our time and meeting bi-weekly. But we saw, for the first time, that our previous work habitschecking email too frequently, not using a to-do list consistently, underinvesting in creating templates or habits to standardize our workhad cost us a lot of time. This was the first time I realized that most people have no idea how much time they could be saving if they took an intentional approach to time management. But it wouldnt be the last. What started as a bi-weekly meeting with my coworker, Colin, evolved into a 3-office initiative involving over 40 colleagues that spanned two years. How I turned Coping with Burnout into a Business ModelThis experience ultimately led me to leave that job and foundZarvana, a company that offers time-saving services to professionals. It became an extension of my personal experience, teaching others from intuition and experience: what had worked for me and my team or what we had read worked for others. But then, we asked ourselves a question: Could we actually calculate how much time people could save by adopting time-saving practices? To find out, we began to ex plore what the research said. At first, wed just sort through clickbait headlines (Save 8 hours per day on interruptions or 6 ways to give great feedback) with no references to actual data or analysis in many of our favorite business and management publications. Then we headed over toGoogle Scholar andSSRN (according to Malcolm Gladwell, the greatest website on the Internet), and dug into the academically published papers. We read through papers onradiologists processing x-rays,how to cut in line, andanalyses of 0.5M tasks entered into an online to-do list. And, lo and behold, we were able to begin to establish a menu of research-backed, time-saving practices and assign actual time-savings to each of the practices. Our findings confirmed what Colin and I tasted several years ago: we can literally save in the order of hours per day by adopting a handful of best practices hours every day.Our initial research has found significant savings in 7 key areas:Managing your tasks and prioritizin g - savings of up to 2 hours and 28 minutes per dayManaging minimizing interruptions - savings of up to 2 hours and 27 minutes per dayGiving effective, frequent feedback delegating well - savings of up to 1 hour and 45 minutes per dayControlling your email - savings of up to 1 hour and 21 minutes per dayOvercoming procrastination and lack of motivation - savings of up to 1 hour and 13 minutes per dayMastering keyboard shortcuts - savings of up to 37 minutes per dayStreamlining how you manage your work projects - savings of up to 30 minutes per dayWhile you cant just add savings across these seven areas to find total possible savingssince there is overlap in the savings across areasthe amount of time-savings possible surprised even me. In a big way. Many of our greatest career opportunities will be demanding and stretching, pushing us beyond where we feel comfortable. The risk of burnout is highIn a recent Gallup study of nearly 7,500 full-time U.S. employees, 28% of millennials cla imed to feel frequent or constant burnout at work, compared with 21% of workers in older generations. An additional 45% of millennial workers say they sometimes feel burned out at work, suggesting that about seven in 10 Millennials are experiencing some level of burnout on the job.But burnout does not need to drive us from careers we love.Real research and analyses show that we can get way more done in less time if only we know and then make habits out of science-backed practices. At Zarvana, we launched theTime-Findera 10-15-minute online diagnosticto help people understand exactly how much time they could be saving and how.To date, the average total savings found by those taking it is an astounding 3.52 hours/day!The Most Effective Ways to Save Time at WorkAcross the seven areas, here are the 3 practices that offer the most savings, each over 40 minutes per day:1. Get a do not disturb sign = 47 mins/day savedIn-person interruptions are a pain, especially in the age of the open offic e. To address this challenge, researchers from Zurich, Switzerland and North Carolina developed a traffic light-like light that would automatically pick up on and indicate workers availability. This light, which came to be known as the FlowLight, was mounted on a users cubicle wall or outside a users office. FlowLights were shipped to 450 workers in 12 countries: participants used them for 1-2 months. The outcome? The FlowLight resulted in 46% fewer interruptions. Some participants even reported that the lights motivated them to finish their work faster. (Further, 85% of users were still using the light 2 months after the study ended.)2. Dont miss deadlines = 45 mins/day savedKeith Wilcox, a researcher out of Columbia University, analyzed half a million tasks entered into a popular to-do list app and found that when users changed the deadline for a task, it took them an average of 16 more days to complete the task than when they kept the original deadline.Missing deadlines is not a on ce in a while occurrence eitherusers changed deadlines on 51% of tasks. To see some of the best tips on how to estimate how longs tasks will take so that you never miss a deadline again, read: Professional Project Managers Tips on How to Maximize Productivity.3. Schedule out your whole day = 43 mins/day savedWhats best for our daily productivity: a to-do list or simply our calendar? The answer is both. Heres why:Beginning in 2005, a large radiological services company had researchers analyze 2.7M cases their doctors processed (these were mostly images such as X-rays, MRI etc.). These tasks were randomly assigned to each of the doctors by the firms queuing system. The twist? For 2.5 years, doctors didnt have to follow the company policy on the order in which images would be processed They could call the shots themselves. In total, the time it took to read an image was 13% higher for the doctors who deviated from company policy. Why? Only because of the added time spent deciding which task to do next. The takeaway is simple: we should use our to-do list to schedule out everything were going to do each day into our calendar and then, just let our calendar direct our day.So, what do you think? The main reason young professionals burn out at their jobs is feeling constantly overwhelmed by a mounting pile of tasks, seemingly impossible to tackle within the desired timeframe. Fortunately, theres a way, backed by research and made easy for you to access, to change that. So dont let burnout be the reason you leave a job or career you love.Which of the 5 signs of burnout are you experiencing or have you experienced recently? What would it look like for you to take an intentional approach to becoming more productive?Which of the suggested time-saving actions could you put into practice tomorrow?

Resume Format 2019 Guide with Examples
Resume Format 2019 Guide with Examples Resume Format 2019 Guide with Examples Why is the resume format so important? Pollard had put it in the exact words when he implied that although information is important, it is uselss unless it is organized, processed, and available to the right people in a format for decision making. In fact, unprocessed data is a burden. Maybe your resignation was not along the lines of how had imagined it for months. Maybe you didn't get a chance to hop on your manager's table and do the unspeakable, unhygienic things you had wanted. But the bottom-line is, you did manage to conclude months of anxiety and self-doubt before finally submitting that paper. If you believe enough is enough, you definitely deserve a job you love. And well, now's the time to make it happen! You open your laptop and start writing your resume. But wait! If you're like most people, you have no clue about the resume structure or where and how to begin. What are the resume types you can use? Which resume style will look better for your profile? Why do you need a resume format 2019? How can you choose the best resume format 2019 for your resume? Using the best resume format 2019 serves as a blueprint for creating a highly targeted resume based on the kind and the years of work experience that you have (of course you'll need a job description). Moreover, over the years the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and simpler resume parsers used by recruiters and companies have evolved to recognize and read resumes only if they follow certain guidelines. Picture this: You have a stellar career profile and you write your resume in a format that is not suitable for your profile. Trust us on this that in spite of putting in the hard work, you might not get shortlisted by the ATS being used by the recruiter. You need to have the resume format 2019 to pass the ATS test! Even if you're sending your resume through a human recruiter, you should choose an effective resume format 2019 which is well known in the industry. Recruiters look at resumes for a mere 6 seconds and you do not want to end up in the reject pile simply because you did not use the best resume format 2019 available. Having said that, you should also take into account the latest resume format 2019 trends and choose the best resume format 2019 (popular with both ATS and recruiters) so that your resume does not seem dated. Thus, using a combination of established resume standards along with the latest trends (by choosing a recognized and resume format 2019), you greatly increase your chances of getting shortlisted by companies. What are the various types of resume formats 2019? Broadly speaking, there are three different types of resumes that are well accepted in the industry. The resume categories are: 1. Reverse Chronological Resume Format 2019 (Standard resume format 2019) Imagine a timeline starting from now and dating back to the beginning of your education with all your major achievements and information listed along with important dates. Essentially, that is what a reverse chronological resume format 2019 is. To make it more clear, let's look at a sample reverse chronological resume format from Hiration's Resume Builder: Take a look at our resume format 2017 examples along with our popular resume template 2017 catalogue. Sections on the Reverse Chronological Resume: Personal Contact Details Professional Summary Key Skills Professional Experience Internships Education Additional Sections As you can see in the resume image, all the dated sections have been arranged in a reverse chronological order starting from the most recent experience to the education of the candidate. PROS ATS Friendly The Reverse Chronological resume format 2019 is the industry standard when it comes to resumes and is extremely ATS friendly. This means that by using this format you're kind of guaranteeing that all the information on your resume will be correctly parsed by almost any Applicant Tracking System Recruiter Friendly Being the most widely used resume format 2019 in the industry it is regarded to be the best resume format 2019. You can be sure that every recruiter will recognize the reverse chronological resume format 2019. Coherent and easy to create When it comes to making your resume in this format, the process is pretty simple. You simply have to create a time line of major events in your career and expand upon them in your resume. Additional Weight to your most recent work experience The emphasis in a reverse chronological resume format 2019 is laid upon your most recent experience, followed by the experience before it, and so on. This gives you an opportunity to highlight your achievements at the peak of your career (which is now!). This enables you to prove your current worth to your potential employer. CONS Doesn't cover gaps in career If you have large gaps in your professional career, the reverse chronological format will expose them to the recruiter. Because of the emphasis laid on dates, the ATS may also deem you unfit for the position (if you lack relevant work experience). Looks bad for frequent job switchers If you've switched a lot of jobs in a relatively short period of time, a lot of companies will be listed on your reverse chronological resume. This signals to the employers that you might not stick with their company as well. 2. Combination Resume Format 2019 (also called Hybrid Resume Format 2019) As the name suggests, the Combination or hybrid resume format 2019 is a combination of the reverse chronological resume format 2019 and the functional resume format 2019(described in the section below). The combination resume format 2019 allows a candidate to present their skills with actual evidence from their professional experience and achievements. So essentially, points on the resume are grouped based on the skills that they highlight. This adds a lot of value to the resume since now the recruiter not only has a snapshot of the skills the person possesses, but they can actually see how the person employed those skills to create value for the organization. Tip: While grouping or bucketing points under headers/skills, remember to quantify your achievements as much as possible. This will help the recruiter differentiate you from a candidate who has not represented how much value they contributed Example: ? Executed the brand promotions publicity for numerous brands ? Executed the brand promotions publicity for national international markets leading to vol. improvement of 15% in 2 years Here at Hiration, we employ two types of combination formats for our clients based on the number of years of experience that they possess and their industry. Combination Resume Format-1 (Grouping inside Professional Experience) This format is exactly similar to the reverse chronological resume format 2019 apart from the fact that in the Professional Experience section, the points are grouped by the sills that they represent. Here is an example of this type of combination resume format 2019: You can clearly see in the image how resume points have been grouped in the professional experience section under relevant skills. This allows the recruiter to quickly find relevant skills (required for the job) and scan the relevant points only. If you are smart enough to tailor your resume to the job description, you can easily direct the attention of the recruiter to where you want. This is the biggest advantage of using this resume format 2019, making it the best resume vormat 2019 available today Combination Resume Format-2 (Grouping in Summary of Skills section) This format extracts all your achievements and high points in your career to create an entirely separate section called Summary of Skills or Summary Skills. These points are then grouped or bucketed under key skills that they exhibit. This resume format 2019 replaces the traditionally used summary to create a more powerful snapshot of your career which is again highly targeted for the job you are applying to. Here's an example: PROS ATS friendly, Recruiter friendly Both the combination resume formats have all the advantages there are to the reverse chronological format since they employ the same dated sections. So basically, they are ATS friendly, recruiter friendly and are well recognized by recruiters and organizations. Hides Gaps in Employment Additionally, the combination format can be wisely used to draw the recruiters attention to skill based achievements that you've gathered over the years to mellow down the effect of gaps in your employment history. Tackles the problem of frequent job switches Even if you are a frequent job switcher, you can aggregate resume points across jobs and group them under skills to exhibit your expertise (in combination format-2). CONS More Time Consuming Well, since the pay off is high, the time taken to develop a combination resume increases since you have to do the additional work of grouping points under common skills. Tip: Reduce your effort and use pre-filled templates on our resume builder to create your resume in combination resume format 2019. You can also take inspiration from our resume format 2017 examples and our popular resume template 2017 catalogue. Not suitable for early stage professionals In case of early stage professionals, they might not have enough points to group under relevant skills. In such as case, the grouping does not make sense and it is better to go with the reverse chronological resume format. 3. Functional Resume Format (Skill based resume) The functional resume format is on the other extreme of the reverse chronological format. Only the professional experience headers are listed in this resume format 2019 without any details of the actual work done. Instead, a separate section is created in which points are grouped under relevant skills. While this is recommended by some resume experts for people who have gaps in their employment history or for people who have changed their jobs a lot, we at Hiration do not recommend using this format. Recruiters find the most value if they can see your career progress and how you have evolved as a professional. The functional resume format 2019 does not display your skills and points under the relevant work experience and hence, is not usually accepted by both ATS as well as recruiters. You can read more about it in the Pros and Cons section. Meanwhile here is an example of the functional resume format 2019: PROS Hides employment gaps The functional resume is a skill based resume format 2019 can be used by candidates to focus on skills and totally avoid the work history. Tackles the problem of frequent job switches Since the complete focus is on points grouped by skills, it helps to mask the job hopping trait of the candidate. CONS Not parsed by Applicant Tracking Systems The functional resume format 2019 is not parsed by most ATS. Since an ATS looks for points under the relevant work experience, it is unable to correctly read the points in this format. Seems fishy to recruiters and employers The functional format raises suspicions in the minds of the recruiters that the candidate is trying to hide something. It is not a well accepted resume format 2019. So these were the 3 different types of resumes. Which one are you going to use? Read on to discover your ideal choice as the best resume format 2019. You can also move on directly to our resume templates on our resume builder. Which is the best resume format 2019 for you? Finally this is the part which you've been waiting for. So, which is the best resume format 2019 for you? View our Resume Templates 2017 Catalogue to look at all our resume templates. Well, luckily, there's a pretty straight forward way to determine which resume format 2019 wouldserve you as the best resume format 2019 for you. Just look at the section below to see under which category you fall and choose the best resume format for your resume accordingly: Students Resume Format Well if you're a student, you don't have a lot of professional experience. You're probably thinking what can you write on your resume? Which format should you choose? The best resume format 2019 for you is the reverse chronological resume format 2019. You'd always have your extra-curricular and co-curricular achievements that you can showcase on your resume. Moreover, if you've done any kind of voluntary work or internships, they can take the spot of your professional experience. Just ensure that you display your work experience by tailoring it to the job you're looking for. Focus on the skills the recruiter is looking for. Experienced Resume Format 2019 Entry Level Professionals If you're making an entry level resume, again, the reverse chronological resume format 2019 should be your choice. Since you would not have a lot of professional experience, it would be difficult to group your resume points into skills. So, creating a combination resume would be difficult for you. Mid Level Professionals Choosing a resume for a mid level professional is tricky. It really depends on the work you have done and the kind of skills you have accumulated over your career. Lets say you have learned a lot of skills and you have the resume content to show for it. In this case, you should go ahead with a combination resume format 2019. In case you've specialized and focused on a specific area, you should go for the reverse chronological resume. That way, you can really show potential employers how you're progressed over the years. Senior Professionals At Hiration, we almost always suggest our senior clients to go with the combination resume format 2019. You need to showcase your skills and validate with them the work that you have done. You need to modify each resume that you send out based on the job description. Highlight the skills that are most relevant to the job that you're applying to. A note on Functional Resume Format 2019 While some people suggest that functional resume format 2019 is good for certain professionals, we strongly recommend that you do not use it. A functional resume format 2019 does more harm than good for your job application. The table below compares the three resume formats with each other. Take a look to determine which format you should use. Comparison of Reverse Chronological, Combination and Functional resume formats Chronological vs Functional vs Combination Resume Reverse Chronological Combination Functional ATS Compatibility ATS Friendly ATS Friendly ATS Incompatible Focuses On Work Experience Work Experience & Skills Only Skills [Not good] Resume Layout Professional & Well Accepted Highly Effective & Targeted Clumsy & Not Effective Major Pros ATS readable & clean format ATS readable & highly effective Hides gaps in employment Major Cons Skills are not validated Only for people with experience No emphasis on work-ex Ideal for Everyone Experienced Professionals No one Resume Formatting: How to format a resume? The key to formatting a resume lies in gaining an understanding of the different sections that go in a resume. Irrespective of the format that you decide to go for, your resume will invariably contain: Your personal details (Name, contact information, etc.) An Objective/Summary statement A Skills section (You might as well not make a resume than make one without a Skills section) Professional Experience (excluding entry-level candidates) Internships (if applicable) Education Additional Sections (Optional) How you arrange these sections and how you go about placing them in your resume is what resume formatting is all about. Step 1: Personal Information As much as it pains us to say this, don't write 'CV' or 'Resume' on the top. Just...no. Start off with your name in a text size larger than all other sections so that your most distinguishing feature on that piece of paper stands out. Mention your contact details, email id location. Go for a professional email id and not something like princess_jean@gmail.com or sam_samurai@gmail.com Mention your current location. If you are willing to relocate, you can mention the same either at the end of your resume or in your cover letter. Step 2: Summary/Objective In case you are an entry-level professional, you can go for an Objective statement instead of a Professional Summary section For all other sections, you can go for a crisp Professional Summary section detailing the skills that you possess and how you plan to use that for resolving organizational issues and achieve company goals. Make sure that the summary is crisp and does not exceed 4-5 lines Try to derive a cause-effect relationship in each point in the summary. Don't just mention your achievements from your previous profiles - rephrase them to convince the recruiter how the skills that went into those achievements are transferrable and can be used for the benefit of the organization Step 3: Skills Depending on your profile and industry, Skills will broadly come under Managerial/Professional Skills: Hard skills relevant to your target job profile Technical Skills: No sector is immune to technology. You can use this section to list out your proficiency in online tools, software, methodologies, techniques, programming languages, etc. Soft skills: non-professional abstract skills like communication, problem-solving, etc. Prioritize your professional skills over soft skills. The JD is your most accurate source to understand the skills which the recruiter is looking for. Step 4: Professional Experience Align the company and profile to the left and date/location to the right. It's the industry norm for most single-column resumes and recruiters usually look for them this way. Start off with your current/last-held profile (reverse-chronological resume) Mention a one-line description for all the companies where you have worked Use crisp bullet points starting off with action verbs and bold important phrases/words Group similar points together and assign sub-headings to them for greater impact Do that for all the work profiles Step 5: Education List your most recent qualification first to include the university, college, major/minor and time period Mention your GPA only if it's 3.5 or above If it's been more than 3 years since your graduation or if your GPA is less than 3.5, you can skip your GPA altogether Provide details of academic projects that you completed Step 6: Additional Sections Additional sections can include Training, Certifications, Publications, Extra-curricular Achievements, Hobbies/Interests, etc. You can include information pertaining to proficiency in languages in this section While listing out your hobbies, try to align your interests along the lines of what might be relevant for the recruiter Try to quantify your interests and achievements. Merely mentioning 'travelling' or 'music' as a hobby adds no value to your resume whatsoever Step 7: Fonts, Margins Spacing Go for sans-serif fonts (Arial, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Century Gothic, Calibri, Lucida Sans, Tahoma, etc.) over serif fonts Most ATSes are unable to process serif fonts - hence, sans serif fonts are your best bet Make sure that the font size is not smaller than 10 and not larger than 12 (for the section points and not section headings) Formatting legibility of the text can't be compromised in the quest to reduce a resume to 1 page Make sure that you leave a minimum of 1 inch margin on all sides Before you send across your resume, print it out to see how it would look on paper Keep the spacing single-spaced for your resume, with a line break after each section Key Takeaways There can't be a universal resume format 2019 ideal for everyone. Resume formats depends on two key factors - your career trajectory and the job role you are targeting Resume format 2019 is not a way for you to hide your career gaps or inadequacies. It's always better to be upfront about the same rather than use the best resume format 2019 to disguise it Quantify all your achievements and make sure that they are clearly visible across all your profiles Pay special attention to font, font size, margin and spacing. There's no use slogging over a resume for days only to have it rejected because the spacing rendered it illegible. Use standard sections highlighted above because ATSes are programmed to scan them. Trying to be quirky by replacing the Professional Experience section with something like 'Career Graph' or 'Work Story' will only jeopardise your chances. Still have more doubts around the ideal Format for your Resume? Drop in a line below and our resume experts will get back to you within 24 hours!

Reaching Out with 3D Printed Hands
Reaching Out with 3D Printed Hands Reaching Out with 3D Printed Hands Some of the greatest heroes of comics and science fiction get their might from machines that, in fact, compensate for major physical disabilities. The same fusion-powered chest implant that keeps Tony Starks injured heart beating also controls his invincible Iron Man armor. Father-and-son Jedi masters Anakin and Luke Skywalker both gripped their light sabers in lifelike bionic hands. But in real life, a new crop of low-cost 3D printed prosthetics beat these make-believe marvels of mechanical engineering hands down. Children account for a significant share of the two million Americans today living without one or more of their limbsmost of them have lost hands or lower arms from amputation, injury, or birth defects. While advanced artificial limbs today are amazingly dexterous, they can cost up to $100,000, far beyond the reach of lower-income families and too steep for the tastes of many health insurers. That disparity has inspired humanitarian engineering organizations and mission-driven private companies on both sides of the Atlantic to reach out with a more affordable solution made possible by additive manufacturing. Joel Gibbard, CEO of Open Bionics, showing a low-cost bionic hand his company designed. Image: Open Bionics The 3D mechanical hand maker movement gets its momentum from a convergence of do-it-yourself 3D printing expertise, social media activism, and plenty of individual goodwill from ingenious engineers. Case in point: Open Bionics,Bristol, UK. The company has teamed up with the Walt Disney Company on a new series of fun and functional bionic hands inspired by characters from Marvel Comics, the Star Wars saga, and Disney movies such as Frozen. Open Bionics has developed sustainable business and manufacturing processes that allow it to produce high-quality, customized bionic hands sold at a price 100 times lower than top-of-the-line limbs. The Disney-inspired range, featuring the Iron Man Hand, the Light Saber Hand, and a Frozen-themed Snowflake Hand, are tricked out with flashing lights and other effects that add fun to their functionality. The goal, according to company founder Joel Gibbard, is to help kids view their prosthetics as a source of excitement rather than embarrassment or limitation. The company evolved from a successful crowdfunded initiative on Indiegogo to provide low-income kids with free bionics with functionality comparable to high-end models. That experience inspired Gibbard to launch Open Bionics, a business venture with humanitarian aims. With a price tag in the $1,000 range, the companys devices are affordable for families of kids who might otherwise have to settle for the venerable hook or, worse yet, no prosthetic of any kind. Its a far cheaper alternative than other commercial devices, yet the revenues are sufficient to support Open Bionics investments in quality control, regulatory compliance, and product development. As Gibbard puts it, even though it is now possible for people to 3D print and assemble good prosthetics themselves, many amputees would still prefer the greater convenience and customer support provided by a manufactured item. e-Nable offers open source files for 3D printing hands and arms. Image: e-Nable The Open Bionics model is an extension of grassroots humanitarian initiatives such as e-Nable, which brings volunteer engineers, 3D printing enthusiasts, occupational therapies, students, inventors, and professors together to provide prosthetics to children without hands. The group is the brainchild of Jon Schull, a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology. Schull used social media channels to mobilize like-minded volunteers around the goal of supplying free prosthetics for low-income children. More than 6,000 e-Nable volunteers have printed more than 1,500 devices for children in 50 countries, the group states. Future initiatives include developing more realistic-looking hands and exploring new technologies such as text-to-speech and gene printing. The e-Nable Handomatic web application helps DIY printers to create custom-sized STL files for printing the groups free hand designs. The app automatically emails printable files to users based on their measurements and the type of device they want to build. And, an international volunteer network, e-Nable connects families in need with nearby teams of engineers and related specialists who can help them define, build, and learn to use customized prosthetics, which are provided at little or no cost. We have a responsibility to do this, says Albert Manero, an e-Nable volunteer and Fulbright scholar now pursuing a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Central Florida. With these degrees in engineering, if we cant be helping others with them, then what are they worth? Manero recently led a team of UCF graduate students in a seven-week project to design and build a $350, 3D printed bionic appendage for a six-year-old boy born with only half his right arm. Maneros 32-member group is sharing the blueprints and assembly instructions as free open-source content online. But that was only the beginning for Manero and his all-student volunteer organization Limbitless Solutions. UCF is partnering with the group to establish the Center for Applied Biomedical Additive Manufacturing. The partnership will give the group space to further develop its prototypes with support from the universitys researchers and technology transfer experts. Through the Center, Limbitless Solutions plans to collaborate with other universities to extend their expertise to other engineers interested in helping children in their local areas. 5 Major Signs Its Time for a LinkedIn Profile Makeover
5 Major Signs Itâs Time for a LinkedIn Profile Makeover 5 Major Signs Itâs Time for a LinkedIn Profile Makeover So, you are trying to determine whether your LinkedIn profile needs a makeover? Maybe it does, maybe it doesnât. But how do you know for sure? There are a few major signs that it's time for a LinkedIn profile makeover. In this article, we will lay out 5 simple checklist items that may indicate it is time for a LinkedIn makeover. 1. You have not achieved an âAll-Starâ profile strength One of the easiest things you can do to boost your LinkedIn presence is to achieve an âall-starâ profile strength. There are 5 levels of LinkedIn profile strengths: (5) All-Star (4) Expert (3) Advanced (2) Intermediate (1) Beginner All you must do to achieve the âAll-Starâ rank is: Add a profile photo List 2+ positions you have held w/ descriptions List 5+ skills on your profile Write a summary Fill out your industry zip code Add your education Have 50+ connections Hopefully, by now you have achieved âAll-Starâ status. But even though LinkedIn calls you an all-star, this is really just the beginning. 2. You are job hunting and receiving no hits If you are on the market looking to attract employers, then you better hope that your LinkedIn Profile is top notch. After receiving your resume, one of the first things that any recruiter/hiring manager will do is look at your social media accounts. Why would they do that!? Well, they want to make sure you are a real person, a good person, and confirm that what you listed on your resume is true. LinkedIn is the best place to go for this. A LinkedIn makeover is not only important to appear âprofessionalâ and âtruthfulâ, but it also helps you get noticed. Believe it or not, a well-written fully optimized LinkedIn profile will help recruiters find you. Recruiters like to search for potential hires on LinkedIn. When they search, itâs important that they can find you. If you donât have the right keywords on your resume to pop-up in their searches, then you will never be found. And if you are never found, well, it will be hard to get hired! Not sure where to start? Check out the 19 Essential LinkedIn Profile Tips For Job Seekers. 3. You have noticed a decrease in profile views Oh, no! A decrease in profile views. Are you going out of fashion? Did you do something wrong? Have you been slacking on your posting game? Whatever it is, you are not alone! Itâs very common to have a ton of profile views one week, and very few the next week. This usually can be traced back to your level of activity. Have you been endorsing your connections? Have you been commenting on posts or publishing new articles? Are you continuing to add relevant connections to grow your network? Have you tried updating your headline? Changing your pic? Joining new groups? Doing these things will play a huge factor in the number of profile views that you receive. Quick Fix Tip: Did you accidentally check the little box on the right side of your profile making all your updates private? I only say this because sadly, it is very common! If you have tried these tips listed above, and you are still unhappy with the number of profile views you are receiving, it could very well be time for a LinkedIn Profile Makeover! 4. You are not in the top 1% for profile views Itâs human nature to want to be #1. Nobody joins a competition, race, or sporting event to come inlast place. You donât take a test to score in the bottom 1 percentile. You donât strive for a salary within the lower 1% of Americans. LinkedIn drives some healthy competition (especially for a competitive spirited person such as myself) by showing you how you rank for profile views compared to the rest of your network. It can be very hard to become #1 (trust me I have been trying). But it isnât that hard to be in the top 1% of your connections. As a test, just for fun, I created a new LinkedIn profile to see how fast I could become a 1%er. Within 3 weeks I had over 2,000 connections and was ranked #14. Now, you donât have to be a math genius to know that is in the top 1%. I am not trying to brag; all I am trying to say is that this is totally do-able by anybody! If you arenât sure how to make this happen, itâs probably time for a Professional LinkedIn Makeover. 5. You are reading this post Now, if you are a complete boss, you might be thinking, âI donât need a LinkedIn makeover. I have an all-star profile strength, I receive job offers all the time, my profile views are steadily increasing, and I am in the top 1% of all my connections.â Heck, you might even be #1 out of 20,000. If that is you, first I want to say, Congrats! You are awesome. But, I doubt you got your profile where it is today by being lazy and unambitious. So, I think it would be a fair assumption for me to say that you are highly competitive and driven. With that being said, why settle? Is #1 out of 20,000 good enough? Why not be #1 out of 50,000? I would be willing to bet that there is at least one thing on your profile that could improve. Whether you are a âBeginnerâ or an âAll-Starâ, a LinkedIn profile makeover could be highly beneficial. If you donât mind doing a bit of reading, thereâs a ton of great articles out there to help you with this process (see below). New York City institutes paid safe leave for domestic violence
New York City institutes paid 'safe leave' for domestic violence New York City institutes paid 'safe leave' for domestic violence On Tuesday, a new bill was signed into law in New York City to offer financial support and workplace protection to domestic violence survivors. For survivors of domestic violence, maintaining your economic independence and financial security can be key to escaping your abuser and protecting your family. Dealing with domestic violence may mean being late to work, moving with no notice, or missing work to go to court to get a protection order - along with other time-consuming tasks that put victims at risk of losing money and their jobs. People who experience intimate partner violence lose an average of 7.2 days of work-related productivity per year. Research from the Joint Center for Poverty Research at Northwestern University found that up to half of domestic violence survivors will lose their jobs. The new law is intended to address these problems. What the law doesThe new law, Intro. 1313-A, doesnât increase the minimum of 40 hours of paid leave that workers are entitled to in Ne w York City, but it expands it to cover whatâs called âsafe leave,â for domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and trafficking survivors.âThis new law will make it easier for survivors to get the care they need without jeopardizing their livelihood,â New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said.More states are using paid safe leave to protect survivorsâ job securitySo far, access to this kind of leave depends on where you live and who you work for.New York City joins eight states - Arizona, Washington, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont - which have enacted laws requiring employers to provide safe leave. In 2015, the U.S. government made paid sick leave - which included safe time for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking - a benefit for all federal employees âto obtain additional counseling, seek relocation, seek assistance from a victim services organization, take related legal action.âFor advocates of paid safe leave, the next step is standardizing the practice across all states. As the National Partnership for Women and Families notes, âAccess to this important protection shouldnât depend on geography.â

I instantly knew I couldnt trust you How and why I was wrong
I instantly knew I couldn't trust you How and why I was wrong I instantly knew I couldn't trust you How and why I was wrong Knowing whom to trust is an important social and business skill. But itâs not that simple â" although it is fast. It took me only seven seconds to assess your confidence, competence, status, likability, warmth, and, yes, your trustworthiness. You canât stop me (or anyone, for that matter) from making these snap decisions. The human brain is wired that way.Whenever we meet new people, our brain automatically and immediately begins to categorize them in some way â" male or female, same or different, friend or foe â" in order to predict what is likely to happen next. Because few of us have the mental agility to consciously perceive and process all the factors needed to make these calculations, we rely on estimates, or guesses, based on our past experiences and preconceptions. While these mental shortcuts work reasonably well most of the time, they also leave us vulnerable to a variety of judgment traps. When I decided not to trust you, my judgement was influenced by the category I put you in and the traits I assigned to that category. In your case, I labeled you as untrustworthy for five reasons â" none of which had anything to do with your actual trustworthiness.1. You werenât like meThere is a well-known principle in social psychology that people define themselves in terms of social groupings: Any group that people feel part of is an âin-groupâ and any group that excludes them an âout-group.â (You know, itâs the âusâ and âthemâ division.)Similarities make us feel comfortable. We assume we know what in-group people are like â" theyâre good people, like we are. Differences, on the other hand, make us a little wary. When we see people as part of an out-group, we are more likely to judge them as untrustworthy.Because you didnât remind me of myself, I saw you as part of the less trustworthy out-group.2. You behaved suspiciouslyWe all have a tendency to make judgments about another personâs integrity based on our ideas of appropriate b ehavior. This shows up in lie detection when we believe that we know how weâd act if we were telling the truth â" and that other truthful people would/should behave the same way.You didnât act the way I would when we met. When you said you were happy to meet me, you didnât smile or offer to shake my hand. Because of this off-putting behavior, I became suspicious of your motives.3. You had low eyebrowsBy studying peopleâs reactions to a range of artificially generated faces, researchers in Princetonâs psychology department found that faces with high inner eyebrows, pronounced cheekbones, and a wide chin struck people as trustworthy. Conversely, faces with low inner brows, shallow cheekbones and a thin chin were deemed untrustworthy.Of course, I realize that eyebrow shapes and cheekbone prominence have no relationship with trustworthiness. But the moment I saw you, I unconsciously overrode my rational mind to make this instinctive judgment.4. You didnât make eye contactTh e biggest body language myth about deception is that liars avoid eye contact. While itâs true that some liars find it difficult to lie while looking you in the eyes, other liars, especially the most brazen, actually overcompensate to âproveâ that they are being truthful by making strong, direct eye contact and holding it steadily. You may have been shy, or an introvert, or from a culture in which direct eye contact is considered intimidating or impolite. But all I noticed was that you didnât look at me when you spoke, and that made me think you were being deceptive or, at least, not authentically invested in what you were saying.5. You had your hands in your pocketsHand and arm gestures are not only an adjunct to speech; gesturing may have been our oldest method of communication. Researchers now believe that early humans communicated using a form of mime. Somewhere in our evolutionary history speech took over from gesture as the main form of communication, but gesture still r etains its power as illustrators and trust indicators. While I would have evaluated your open palm gestures as a nonverbal signal that you had nothing to hide, your concealed hands made it difficult for me to trust you.But now that I know you, I see that you are candid, honest, and highly trustworthy. Iâve learned that deciding whether or not to trust someone by the initial impression they make, is a process that can, and often should, be revised.Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., is an international keynote speaker and leadership presence coach. Important Leadership Skills for Workplace Success
Important Leadership Skills for Workplace Success Important Leadership Skills for Workplace Success Whether one is an office manager or a project leader, all good leaders require a number of soft skills to help them positively interact with employees or team members. Effective leaders have the ability to communicate well, motivate their team, handle and delegate responsibilities, listen to feedback, and have the flexibility to solve problems in an ever-changing workplace. Employers seek these skills in the candidates they hire for leadership roles. Strong leadership skills are also valuable for all job applicants and employees. Whether youre starting out in an entry-level position and looking to move up the career ladder or youre seeking a promotion, your leadership skills will be among your most valuable assets. Here are the top ten skills that make a strong leader in the workplace. Top 10 Leadership Skills 2:10 Watch Now: 8 Qualities That Make an Exceptional Leader 1. Communication As a leader, you need to be able to clearly and succinctly explain to your employees everything from organizational goals to specific tasks. Leaders must master all forms of communication, including one-on-one, departmental, and full-staff conversations, as well as communication via the phone, email, and social media. A large part of communication involves listening. Therefore, leaders should establish a steady flow of communication between themselves and their staff or team members, either through an open-door policy or regular conversations with workers. Leaders should make themselves regularly available to discuss issues and concerns with employees. Other skills related to communication include: Active listeningArticulatingBusiness storytellingClarityConcisionCorrespondenceEditingExplainingExpressionFacilitating group conversationsNonverbal communicationPresentationPublic speakingReading body languageReducing ambiguityVerbal communicationWritten communication 2. Motivation Leaders need to inspire their workers to go the extra mile for their organizations; just paying a fair salary to employees is typically not enough inspiration (although it is important too). There are a number of ways to motivate your workers: you may build employee self-esteem through recognition and rewards, or by giving employees new responsibilities to increase their investment in the company. Leaders must learn what motivators work best for their employees or team members to encourage productivity and passion. Skills related to effective motivation include: Allowing employee autonomyAsking for inputAssessing the interests of staffConvincingMentoringOpen to employee concernsPersuasiveProviding productive and challenging workProviding rewardsRecognizing othersSetting effective goalsTeam-buildingThanking staffUnderstanding employee differences 3. Delegating Leaders who try to take on too many tasks by themselves will struggle to get anything done. These leaders often fear that delegating tasks is a sign of weakness, when in fact it is a sign of a strong leader. Therefore, you need to identify the skills of each of your employees, and assign duties to each employee based on his or her skill set. By delegating tasks to staff members, you can focus on other important tasks. Some skills that make a good delegator include: Accepting feedback from employeesAllotting resources for employeesAssessing employee strengths and weaknessesDefining expectationsEvaluating employee performanceIdentifying measurable outcomesMatching the task to the right employeePrioritizing tasksSetting expectationsTeamworkTime managementTrainingTrust in employees 4. Positivity A positive attitude can go a long way in an office. You should be able to laugh at yourself when something doesnt go quite as planned; this helps create a happy and healthy work environment, even during busy, stressful periods. Simple acts like asking employees about their vacation plans will develop a positive atmosphere in the office, and raise morale among staff members. If employees feel that they work in a positive environment, they will be more likely to want to be at work, and will therefore be more willing to put in the long hours when needed. Some skills that help make for a positive atmosphere in the workplace include: CaringConflict managementDeveloping rapportDiplomacyEncouragingEmpatheticFriendlinessHelping othersHumorInterpersonalPositive reinforcementRespectSocial 5. Trustworthiness Employees need to be able to feel comfortable coming to their manager or leader with questions and concerns. It is important for you to demonstrate your integrity â" employees will only trust leaders they respect. By being open and honest, you will encourage the same sort of honesty in your employees. Here are some skills and qualities that will help you convey your trustworthiness as a leader: Ability to apologizeAccountabilityBusiness ethicsConfidentialityConscientiousConsistent in behavior towards employeesCredibilityEmotional intelligenceEmpathyHonestyIntegrityMoral compassReliabilityRespectfulnessStanding up for what is rightThoughtful 6. Creativity As a leader, you have to make a number of decisions that do not have a clear answer; you therefore need to be able to think outside of the box. Learning to try nontraditional solutions, or approaching problems in nontraditional ways, will help you to solve an otherwise unsolvable problem. Most employees will also be impressed and inspired by a leader who doesnt always choose the safe, conventional path. Here are some skills related to creative thinking: AnalyticalCognitive flexibilityConceptualizationCritical thinkingCuriosityEmbracing different cultural perspectivesForesightIdentifying patternsImaginativeInnovativeListening to othersâ ideasMaking abstract connectionsObservationOpen-mindednessProblem solvingSound judgmentSynthesizingVisionary 7. Feedback Leaders should constantly look for opportunities to deliver useful information to team members about their performance. However, there is a fine line between offering employees advice and assistance, and micromanaging. By teaching employees how to improve their work and make their own decisions, you will feel more confident delegating tasks to your staff. Employees will also respect a leader who provides feedback in a clear but empathetic way. Some skills for giving clear feedback include: Being open to receiving feedbackBuilding confidence in employeesClarityClearly laying out expectationsCoachingFollowing upFrequent feedbackListening to employeesâ responsesMentoringPositive reinforcementProviding specific adviceRespectful 8. Responsibility A leader is responsible for both the successes and failures of his or her team. Therefore, you need to be willing to accept blame when something does not go correctly. If your employees see their leader pointing fingers and blaming others, they will lose respect for you. Accept mistakes and failures, and then devise clear solutions for improvement. Here are some skills and qualities that help leaders convey their responsibility: Acknowledging mistakesBeing open to customer feedbackEvaluating best solutionsForecastingLearning from past mistakesListening to feedback from employees and managersProject planningReflectivenessResolving problemsTransparencyTrouble shooting 9. Commitment It is important for leaders to follow through with what they agree to do. You should be willing to put in the extra hours to complete an assignment; employees will see this commitment and follow your example. Similarly, when you promise your staff a reward, such as an office party, you should always follow through. A leader cannot expect employees to commit to their jobs and their tasks if he or she cannot do the same. Some skills related to commitment in the workplace include: Applying feedbackCommitment to company objectivesDeterminationEmbracing professional developmentFollowing throughKeeping promisesPassionPerseverancePrioritizationProfessionalismTeam playerWork ethic 10. Flexibility Mishaps and last-minute changes always occur at work. Leaders need to be flexible, accepting whatever changes come their way. Employees will appreciate your ability to accept changes in stride and creatively problem solve. Similarly, leaders must be open to suggestions and feedback. If your staff is dissatisfied with an aspect of the office environment, listen to their concern and be open to making necessary changes. Employees will appreciate a leaders ability to accept appropriate feedback. Skills related to flexibility include: Ability to learn new skillsAbility to respond to new problems or issuesAdaptabilityImprovisingNegotiatingOpen to feedbackRecognizing individualsâ strengths and skillsTreating employees as individuals More Essential Skills for Leaders Review a list of leadership skills and examples, as well as some of the best skills to include on your resume and LinkedIn, incorporate them into your job search and career materials, and mention them during job interviews. How You Can Build Leadership Skills You do not need to supervise or be a manager to cultivate leadership skills. You can develop these skills on the job in the following ways: Take initiative: Look beyond the tasks in your job description. Think long-term about what would be beneficial for your department and the company. Try to brainstorm ideas and commit to doing work that goes beyond the daily routine. Request more responsibility: While you wouldnt want to ask for additional responsibility in your second week on the job, once youve been in a position long enough to become an expert, you can share with your manager that youre eager to grow your leadership abilities. Ask how you can help out- are there upcoming projects that require a point person? Is there any work that you can take off of your managers to-do list? Target specific skills: If you have a specific skill that you want to develop- whether its creative thinking or communication- create a plan to improve your abilities in this area. This could mean taking a class, finding a mentor to help, reading books, or setting a small goal that forces you to develop this skill. Talk to managers and co-workers, as well as friends outside of the office, to help develop your plan to improve. How to Showcase Your Skills You can use the skill words listed here as you search for jobs. For example, apply the terms in your resume, especially in the description of your work history. You can also incorporate them into your cover letter. Mention one or two of the skills mentioned here, and give specific examples of instances when you demonstrated these traits at work. You can also use these words in your interview. Keep the top skills listed here in mind during your interview, and be prepared to give examples of how youve exemplified leadership when you respond.
